The much-celebrated Swedish dance company Bounce return to Londons Peacock Theatre with their street dance take on the modern day classic ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’ and so the celebration of their work continues.
Ken Kesey’s novel and Dale Wassermans play hit popular conscious once Jack Nicholson delivered his Oscar worthy performance as R.P. McMurphy in a film which is etched into the minds of anyone whose seen it. This gives Bounce a tough task, to take something so loved and so well known and to give it a new lease of life, but it’s something they manage to do in spades. Injecting enthusiasm, excitement, laughs, pathos and jaw-dropping dance moves into a zippy show which captivates you from the get go and never lets up.
It’s a true testament to the unparallel skill of the troupe how each scene feels fresh and new, at no point does the dance seem repetitive, each sequence offering a innovative visual and aural feast. Dollops of humour are combined with imaginative gimmicks, stand out moments include electroshock therapy mixed with a bungee wall and a fantastic 80s dance montage as the character break free from their illnesses.
The really clever thing about this show isn’t just how accessible it is, if you’ve never seen dance before this is a sure-fire way to learn to love it, but it’s the simple fact that street dance is the perfect way to interpret mental illness in visual form. Each character having their own ticks; from OCD to multiple personality disorder, the moments when the characters are free to express themselves away from their illness are breathtaking in ingenuity and choreography.
In short this is a show that packs an emotional punch whilst spreading a smile across your face. Genuinely entertaining stuff that deserves your patronage.
