The Tobacco Factory started its new life with a makeshift theatre on the first floor, formed by stripping it of its Imperial Tobacco office conversion and suspended ceilings to reveal the original structure and services. George Ferguson had been approached by Show of Strength Theatre Co.'s Director Sheila Hannon who was looking for a new venue for this young Bedminster born company that specialises in the commissioning of new work. It proved an
instant success. This gave Tobacco Factory the seed from which to grow.

This new venue proved popular for parties and music and attracted the attention of Andrew Hilton who had harboured an ambition to stage Shakespeare in an original and intimate manner. George Ferguson accepted his proposal more in hope than than expectancy, but the result has exceeded expectations with national critical acclaim and full houses.

The coming of age of the venue has been the appointment of Dan Danson as Theatre Manager, who had been stage manager for both theatre companies, is transforming this makeshift 'do it yourself' space into a properly serviced theatre that now hosts a variety of work including Tobacco Factory productions, the first of which was the popular Christmas family musical Treasure Island.

The theatre is an intimate and 'raw' space seating up to 250 people and can be arranged in the round, end-on, traverse, or thrust. There is a licensed bar and large foyer/exhibition area. The box office is located in the foyer of the building on the ground floor.
