How do you make a sure-fire West End hit? Take an Oscar winning film, take two Hollywood stars, a British music prodigy, and yes, yes, yes…

Then add the ultimate question – "Can a man and a woman have sex and still be friends??"

And there we have it – the recently premiered When Harry Met Sally.

The Theatre Royal, Haymarket, is home for 16 weeks for the stage adaptation of the classic, romantic comedy that famously starred Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan.

The fantastic script, witty dialogue and heart-warming tale is brought to life in this vibrant, enchanting laugh-out-loud love story.

The daunting task of recreating those roles falls upon Luke (Beverley Hills 90210) Perry and Alyson (“this one time at band camp”) Hannigan.

The original stars became Harry and Sally and I am delighted to say that none of the magic was lost. The slightly new take on these roles is perfectly pitched and played by Perry and Hannigan.

Luke effortlessly inhabits the role delivering his come-ons with endearing charm and his comic timing is spot-on. Alyson’s debut stage outing showcases her ability to adapt to a more intimate style. Her quirky nature and believable portrayal gives perfectionist Sally a real depth that pushes the production forward.

The electrifying chemistry between the two lights up the simple, yet effective stage.

Supporting the lead actors are Jake Broder and Sharon Small playing Jack and Marie. They play the couple down to a tee with just the right amount of humour and empathy.

The talented cast of course have a fantastic adaptation to work with, a real gem of a story, that tackles friends, love, relationships and sex. The smart dialogue is an oral feast while the post modernist staging delights the eyes.

Production design by Ultz did not walk along the well-trodden path of putting the film on stage and instead created an imaginative and versatile playing space.

The use of projection and film sequences cleverly disguises time lapse and scene changes. Add the infamous sound of It Had To Be You, this time given an unmistakable twist by jazz sensation Jamie Cullum admirably assisted by his brother Ben.

The realistic incorporation of food, set and supporting cast have turned When Harry Met Sally into one of London’s must see shows.

A truly hilarious, heart-warming and lovable night out, couples, friends, families and foes will get a kick out of this intelligent production.
