The great things about being a child; a lack of responsibility, free time and Roald Dahl’s classics.

David Wood, the man behind this adaptation has looked deeply into the book to find a way to set the play on a single stage and found… the circus.

The play begins with a fantastically choreographed circus opening involving everything from jumping mugglewumps, that’s the monkey family for those in the dark to local children asked to come and help the production. Costumes were noted at this point for being remarkably realistic, this of course was helped along by the actors’ body language.

Narrator Sidney Sloane expertly handles the proceedings explaining events and introducing the play to the packed audience eager to see their favourite two characters, the Twits.

Of course no one was to be disappointed and soon enough up came the terrible two themselves in full gruesome regalia.

The storyline while slightly rearranged included all the major scenes, including the classic glass eye in the drink and cane shortening tricks.

The play made way for just enough audience participation to really liven the night up and, with none of the more boring clichés used in some pantomimes and all of the clever witticisms that made Dahl famous.

The quality of the acting on all parts was a joy to see but particularly the twits themselves showed great skill and knowledge of their parts. Of course Isabel Ford AKA Mrs Twit invented her part making for an ultra smooth performance and stitches of laughter all the way.

As I mentioned before, putting the set including scenes for African forests to the twit’s back yard in England must have been a great challenge for Wood but it seemed effortless to the performers through clever uses of screens, props and lighting.
