Walking from the Centre to the Tobacco Factory might not take a very very long time, but in the rain after dark it's not the most exciting experience ever. It was nice, then, to get into the warm and dry shelter of the theatre, and to see a very different kind of sanctuary portrayed on stage in this production by the National Theatre.

The story is set in the garden of the graveyard of a church, which is soon to be closed down to make way for a health and fitness club. The set is basically real - a wall round the garden, with barbed wire to keep out vandals, grass and plants in banks against the wall, and a shed in one corner of the stage. It's well lit to set the mood for scenes at daytime or night, And the five TV screens showing flowers among the plants serve to reflect the moods of characters, and the weather towards the end of the play.

The people who meet there are a group who are connected with the church in some way - the priest, her grandmother, the gardener, an immigrant from India, a congregation member who moved over from Rwanda following the civil war, a church worker - an ex-photographer from Trinidad- who works with the children in the church, and a schoolgirl looking forward to life after GCSEs. The international scope of three of the characters makes for some interesting debate on theological ideas, and the stories behind the characters and their reasons for moving to England turn out to be a lot more far-reaching than first thought...

The characters themselves are played well, equality being the name of the game as all actors do a similarly good job. The presence of some slightly corny lines ("I have been searching for him for EIGHT YEARS") is generally outweighed by the quality on display. Whether I was alone in guessing the outcome at the halfway point, I can't say, but it doesn't really matter because the way the whole is executed is really quite superb. It's at turns difficult but compelling, and more light-hearted, with the ending appearing to be a happy one. I don't generally like sentiment in plays, but in this case it's much more well done than such things normally would be, and there's a hint of sorrow which concludes it all very nicely.

It's not without its faults, then, but overall, it's good. Very good. Only on until Saturday, though, so hurry. Get your tickets now.
