Reviewer: Ella Dane-Smith

Though written in 1836, Woyzeck is often considered to be the first truly 'modern' play. The story of a soldier driven mad by inhuman military discipline and discriminating social deprivation is told in fractured dialogue and serrated episodes which are as brilliant today as they would have been half a century ago.

Woyzeck is a blackly comic satire based on a true story of a 19th century barber. Johann Christian Woyzeck was the foundation for George Büchner's play Woyzeck.  Woyzeck was beheaded in 1824 for the slaying of his mistress.  Prior to his execution, Woyzeck was assessed by a Doctor to determine whether he could be considered accountable for his actions.  The Doctor determined that Woyzeck was of sound mind and that any irregularity was due to his physical constitution and moral degeneration.

Büchner wrote Woyzeck during 1836-37.  His work on the play was incomplete at his death; the manuscripts, which still exist today, consist of several incomplete drafts.  None of these drafts is a complete version of the drama, and each represents a different stage in the development of the play.

Being my first visit to the Tobacco Factory I was intrigued and excited about reviewing Woyzeck.  As I entered the small intimate theatre, glass of wine in hand and fellow drama student in tow, I was immediately struck by the simplistic black and red stage set in the intimate round setting. As the lights dimmed the play began, as we were introduced to the main character Woyzeck and it was clear that the performance was to be powerful and full of emotion.

The performance is broken up into fifteen small segments keeping the one act play exciting and challenging.  The cast made up of six actors playing eleven different characters all performed intensely creating much feeling and emotion within the small theatre.  A special mention must be said for Tim Kane who played the doctor, showman and journeyman.  His performance was immaculate and at times hilarious.  Another notable point within this  short play is the monologue performed by Kirsty Cox as Margaret; the  monologue is beautifully written and was brilliantly performed.

Dan Porter gave a pleasing and believable portrayal of Woyzeck but unfortunately I felt due to the intensity of the character became slightly tiresome due to the intensity of his emotions, but this did not sway from a well rounded and very enjoyable performance from all involved.

Although this short play could be seen by some as contemporary challenging theatre, more suited for frequent arty theatre goers, I believe it will appeal to a broad spectrum.  It is a truly sad story brilliantly performed, with the mixture of comedy and emotion leaving you with a feeling of satisfaction at the plays closure.  I found myself thinking about this play long after I had seen it.

It is a challenging piece drawing you into a world of poverty, but this piece does not emotionally capture you allowing you to distance your feelings from the performers while being choked at the pain felt between Woyzeck and his wife as the play draws to a close.  It had a real effect on me and I am sure it will on others and I would most certainly recommend going to see it.
