SPEED dating, capped teeth and Caesar salad and a ready made life are just a few of the highs and lows in the life of the newly empowered single woman whose time after leaving her husband is brought to life in Tell Me on a Sunday.

Audiences in Bristol Hippodrome were delighted by Marti Webb's return to a role that was written especially for her by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black.

After belting out Take that Look Off Your Face following her husband's infidelity, Marti's character makes the move from her married life just outside London to a new single life in New York.

A single-woman show, I was intrigued to see how the story would be told without turning into a concert.

The musical uses clever devices such as direct address to the audience which takes on many different forms - not least the several men in the main character's new life - to give the impression of two-way conversations bringing scenes and situations to life.

Marti moves powerfully around the simple yet incredibly affective set, which is used to move between times, settings and even countries without even needing a single stagehand.

Four large screens are used to project images on to ease the narration of the story and mimic the thoughts and feelings of the show's star.

The story of an independent woman coping with a series of blows to her love life is made even more appealing by the warmth and talent of the leading, and indeed only, lady.

As relationships fail, the audience is drawn to the character learning more by her correspondence with her friends and family.

The role not only needed a performer with a powerful voice and stage presence; it needed someone who could really get inside the minds of the audience. And Marti is the obvious person to see in her role - and you will not be disappointed.

A powerful tale interspersed with humour and expertly staged - you can Tell Me on a Sunday any day of the week!
