I’m going to try my best not to use any panto puns while reviewing Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs, which is on till January 18th at The Bristol Hippodrome, but the show itself is full of them, oh no it isn’t…..arse!

The totally traditional pantomime is filling the Hippodrome’s large stage for the festive period, with Lily Savage in the lead as The Wicked Queen. Couple her with a large cast of dancers (all very Butlins-esq with endless enthusiasm) and a live orchestra, then you’ve got a cracker of a show on your hands.

Sticking to the original Snow White story we are taken through song and dance numbers, a particularly delightful ballet of the animals at the end of act one being one of the highlights. We have typical panto gags, small comedy scenes on the front cloth waiting for scene changes, namely played out by Fogwell Flax and Janice Connolly of Phoenix Nights fame. Fogwell blends his superb impressions with effortless joy and Janice masters her characterisation with all the little tit-bits that make panto what it is.

Poppy Tierney as the attractive snow white brought strong vocals and coupled with her prince Andrew Kennedy they both offered charming performances. The young talented dancers from Bristol School Of Dancing added plenty of energy to the brilliantly choreographed dance scenes and Sean Canning delivered a fabulous portrayed as Catsmeat. The seven dwarfs were, as you’d imagine them to be, the seven actors whimsical throughout, and really help make the magic in this production.

But of course it is the star Lily  Savage that makes the show. The scenes involving her have the audience rolling in the aisle as she’s just evil enough to be wicked and still horrible enough to be loved! Lily ’s vicious humour and audience interaction shows what a consummate performer she is, leaving the audience waiting in anticipation for her to come back on.

The colourful sets and costumes mixed with some pyrotechnics and special effects, mainly the clever mirror scenes keep the show technologically advanced and will give even the biggest kid a few surprises.

This is a great traditional pantomime for all the family, it’s something every child should experience at one stage in their life, and you probably won’t find anything better than this at the moment.

Panto isn’t what it used to be, this isn’t the best show in ever but it’s most certainly not the worst. It is quite forgettable on the whole but still good old fashioned family entertainment. Laughing, Clapping, Singing, Dancing, Booing and Hissing,  it’s all part of this fun family night out. Lily  Savage alone is worth the ticket price, so take the family on an outing to the Hippodrome, you’ll have a ‘wicked’ time!
