That old MGM Classic, which you thought, was just a song is pouring onto the Bristol stage in this brilliant adaptation of the Gene Kelly movie.

So it’s not just one song oh no infact there’s a plethora of musical numbers including the other famous one “Good Morning.” All of the big sing songs manage to hold their own unique style in the classy musical set in the 1920s movie industry. The basic story is that Don Lockwood is a silent movie star along with Lina Lamont, Don falls in love with Kathy who Lina hates and then uses her to dub Linas brilliantly funny voice in the first movie with sound…get it?

Ok so as with most musicals its no Shakespeare but that doesn’t matter for it’s the music, which carries the show. Extremely old fashioned in style it does make a nice change from electric guitars and drums to finally hear something so refreshing on the ear.  The old fashioned style continues with real song and dance numbers which are so lavish you can imagine that you are back on Broadway in its heyday. The stunning dancing really is something to behold and the tap dancing skills of the whole cast move this production from average to brilliant!

Completely perfect characters entwined marvellous voices from this rather old cast for a musical, makes this romantic Hollywood show something for everyone…especially those who can almost remember the birth of the talkies!

The lighting was effective with the idea of not hiding the lights worked with the whole movie industry setting. Homage is paid throughout to the film since three large screens continually project different videos and images, it’s really something unexpected, different and a sparklingly display of how technology can be used! We mustn’t forget the title number though as both acts end with it and the torrential downpour of rain. Sit in the front at your peril, as you will get soaked. The rain effect is hilarious to watch and actually seeing water on stage is something completely unique.

Different actually is a very good word to sum up this musical, its not what you expect nowadays yet fulfils any desires which you may have. Darren Bennett as Don plays his part brilliantly and Richard Brightiff’s Cosmo (Don’s best mate!) seems to fit his role effortlessly. The female leads (Cheryl Mcavoy and Jacqui Rae) both deserve mentions for their strong performances, which can not be faulted.

The only thing this show lacked was the X factor, it just seemed a tad lifeless at times and the audience I feel weren’t responding to it as they have to so many other musicals, maybe its just the story the music or the lyrics but there is something missing.

However let this not put you off. Singing In The Rain is an umbrella of entertainment, and makes a welcome break for the daily schedule of Football Matches in the World Cup. So get your macs and brollys out and go to Sing In The Rain!
