Reviewer: Alison Cox

After 5 years wowing crowds in London, The Rat Pack is now touring the UK and brought an evening of glitz, glamour and wonderful music to The Bristol Hippodrome.

In a nutshell the “Rat Pack” is pretty much a concert on stage…but boy what a concert with fantastic music and singing performances. It followed a typical night at Sands Hotel in Las Vegas with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jnr, singing independently, then as a duet or trio, joking with each other and showing camaraderie, especially to the 3 showgirl singers. This was like stepping back in time to Vegas when these guys were at the height of their fame, it’s completely believable especially as they are smoking and drinking Jack Daniels throughout!

The opening scene transported the audience back to the famous Copa Room at Sands Hotel Las Vegas. Complete with a fantastic brass section, drums, keyboard, guitar and piano, the band formed part of the set.

Frank Sinatra (Henry Prego) who is billed as the best Sinatra tribute artist in the business, certainly put in a superb performance and lived up to his billing. His voice was sublime throughout the classics, My Way, All the Way/Chicago, I’ve Got You Under My Skin, and of course New York New York.

Sammy Davis Jn (Alonzo Saunder) who gave a very energetic performance, he was vocally talented and personified Sammy. While looking at the audience it was apparent that all those over 60! Knew all the words but the audience was stuffed full of youngsters who were introduced to these timeless classics by the likes of Robbie Williams, and would have left with a new found respect for the music, and having had witnessed a phenomenal show.

Dean Martin (Nigel Casey) had it all, sex appeal a real ladies man. His personification was brilliant. This being a tribute he did of course sing all the well known numbers, including That’s Amore, Memories are Made of This, Volare, Sway, Everybody Loves Somebody, An Evening in Roma and King of the Road.

The gents were also treated to some eye candy in the shape of  The Berelli Sisters –brilliant, classy show girls in seductive long red evening gowns, with just enough leg showing, they danced and sang their way through the show in expert style.

It seemed as if those on stage were having as much fun as us in the audience. The show is lively, good natured and bloody good fun! It has moments of superb comedy, especially with the JD bottle, to quote Dean Martin on those who don’t enjoy the odd tipple, “when you wake up in the morning that’s as good as you’ll feel all day!”

All in all anyone who loves the Ratpack will adore this musical feast of songs and those who don’t will get a kick out of this old fashioned entertainment, and songs that span the generations.

This is as close as you’ll ever get to seeing these legends on stage, and I can tell you….it’s almost like watching the real thing.
