The cast of 'Oh! What a Night!' brought all their performance skills to bear in recreating the seventies disco era, with a show that incorporated classic 70's disco hit songs, slick choreography, energetic movement and a funky live backing band, all delivered to an audience many of whom would have fond memories of the long, hot summer of '76.

In the main, the young cast has a strong background of dance and theatrical training. This is reflected in the effervescent dance routines which were reminiscent of the very best of Arlene Philip's 'Hot Gossip.'

The authentic styles of costumes, including crushed velvet hotpants, leopard print polyester, huge afro hair and beads recreated the colourful flavours of Carnaby Street, 70's glam and disco-influenced fashion.

The show is largely set in a New York Disco whose owner, Paul, is an alcoholic widower. Nick, Paul's son-in-law-to-be, manages the business. Meanwhile, Rik, a singer/songwriter from Britain arrives at the club, having come to New York to seek fame and fortune. He is taken on as a barman and discovers by chance that Nick has some unsavoury plans for taking control of the business. Financial prospects are looking bleak when unexpectedly, 'Roxy', played by Sheila Ferguson - yes, she of the legendary Three Degrees fame - arrives with the news that a film company is looking for Harlem's best disco dancers to star in a new film and will visit the club to audition in two weeks.

The plot is, to be fair, somewhat incidental and, starting with the base-slapping "Theme from Shaft" it is the funky beat of some thirty 70's disco hits and the tireless energy of the dancers that sets the adrenalin racing. The first half of the show ends with the classic "YMCA" - guaranteed to generate audience participation - and this sets the scene for a second half which is even more pacey and includes vintage classics such as "Car Wash", "I Will Survive" and "When Will I See You Again", sung of course by the seemingly ageless Ms Ferguson. As the cast delivered their last few numbers, the audience rose to its feet as one and for fifteen minutes or so were clapping, singing, strutting their stuff in the stalls and boogying on the balcony like there was no tomorrow. You'd be forgiven for thinking you really were back in those feel-good seventies.
