Reviewer: Chris Cox

William Shakespeare’s classic tale of fairs, fickleness and forgeries of jealousy are renovated in this masterful restaging by the recently formed Outlook Productions.

The company say, “Instead of trying to isolate the play’s three worlds of befuddling fairies, befuddled lovers and aspirational actors – we link them together.” And they most certainly did with a heavily accomplished brilliance. Directors Ed Richardson and Rose Sillence have taken the lengthy play and mixed it into a piece of 90-minute enchanting and capturing performance.

The cosy atmosphere of the Alma Tavern Theatre perfectly captured the mood of this spirited production. Its cramped performing space was often a problem for the performers but it managed to beautifully add a sense of magic to the piece, with the gorgeous fairy lights and coloured scarf’s making a Midsummer’s Night feel more like a Christmas Eve…perfectly fitting at this time!

The cast who each played an array of characters failed to show any real characterisation and difference between their parts, however this was not a set back since their performances brought the story and feelings of the involved to life. There were moments of downs, which made the higher percentage of ups seem even more dazzling. There seem to be a few young actors and actresses in this cast begin to carve out their acting career, and from this performance…it’s sure to be a long one. At times there was mumbling and quick speaking, but these were few and far between. It would be unfair to pick any particular cast member out for praise, since they all deserve a plethora of compliments for tackling the piece with a realism whilst maintaining the fantasy. Although there were a few problems, these really are slight and the cast wowed over the attending audience.

Simplicity, Stunning and jolly-well acting! Outlook Productions performance of A Midsummer’s Night Dream, really is a dream to watch – heavenly. This defiantly is a company to keep an eye on, for they are innovative and highly imaginative.

The play moves onto The Man In The Moon Theatre, 392 King's Road, London, SW4 5UZ for January 8th - 12th 2002. To book call 020 7351 2876
