Reviewer: Alison Cox & Kay Harding

Get ready for nostalgia with a capital N, as Love Shack hit’s the Hippodrome stage. Opening with boundless energy the show doesn’t let up as it traverses through classic songs, which leave you dancing in the aisle and enjoying a good sing song.

In a nutshell the show is about group of girls meet group of boys, one from each group gets engaged, stag night and hen night take place, with their invited friend, followed by a splitting up, as girls end up in the same club unbeknown to the boys who are getting wrecked on beer, and the stag is seen kissing the main dancer by hen, but eventually the get back together as they can’t live without each other, with a bit of help from their friends who set them up in a restaurant over a meal, then they get married…get all that….good? Ok so the story is the most vital part of the show, to be honest it’s an excuse for a singing and dancing spectacular, and what an excuse it was!

Sam is played by Jon Lee from S Club 7 who proposes to Joanne played by Emma Barton. Will is Noel Sullivan from Hear’say and is Sam’s flat buddy, a typical bachelor boy, with a great sense of humour and comic timing, he was thoroughly entertaining throughout, and showed he is much more than a member of an ex-band! Bonnie played by Faye Tozer from Steps is Joanne’s friend along with AJ played by Kellie Ryan. Both girls have amazing voices and great acting ability, which although isn’t needed often, is still useful to convey those emotions.

The songs needed to be treated well by the on-stage band, and that they were, with ear-pleasing orchestrations, and every classic tune you could image dancing to…don’t believe me? Ok then, there was, Love Shack, A Town Called Malice, Hero, I’m a Believer, Its Raining Men, I’ve Had The Time Of My Life, Light My Fire, Music To Watch Girls Go By, Never Let Her Slip Away, Poison Arrow, Psychedelic shack, Sexual Healing, Sway (Mucho Mambo), Wives and Lovers and, Express Yourself…told you!

The staging made good use of video clips and a vibrant set. The show had its tongue firmly in its cheek throughout, which created a fantastic vibe of fun and laughter.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable and fun night at the theatre, nothing taxing…so leave your brain at the door and enjoy a energetic and entertaining extravaganza.
