With a sparse stage set dominated by a large tent, the opening night of the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School`s 2002 West Country Tour saw strong performances from a talented cast.  With it`s stylish Edwardian costume, this production of one of Shakespeare`s weaker plots, allows the audience to admire the Bard`s artistry with words.

All of the cast bring animation to their characters and exceptional performances were achieved with particular mention being given to Matthew Evans (Berowne) and Marianne Oldham (Lydia) who both managed to dominate the stage and their characters perfectly. This well-oiled production has a lot to thank from the masterful direction of Andrew Normington who managed to convey the plots and subplots which Shakespeare has to offer.

Although this is one of Shakespeare’s weaker plays the Theatre School manage to transform it into being up there with the likes of Romeo and Juliet. The magnificent performances along with a stunning set and artistic costumes really make this an utterly compelling production.

Remembering that the cast are all students at the Theatre School, with talent like this it is easy to see why they have such a highly acclaimed reputation. Go and see Love’s Labours Lost now, and see some of the future stars tread the boards.
