“At the age of 31 I decided to give up my stupid ways, grow a beard and write a novel. I guess this show is the story of my failure to do two of those things.” Dave Gorman.

Dave Gorman is a 32 year old, with a beard, a story, and one hell of a life. He has managed to take his adventures and turn them into books, TV series and stage shows. Now he’s back, to tell you about two turbulent months of his life, his highs, his lows, his google-whacking.

Let me try and set the premise and describe the show as best I can. Where to start? Well this isn’t stand up, it’s a story, it’s a tale…scarily it’s Dave’s life. It’s true, and it’s real, and it’s well….frankly slightly bizarre and somewhat scary! Dave Gorman is a man who has gone off on silly missions before, he’s found over 50 other Dave Gormans, he’s analysed songs, he’s brought joy to millions, and he is doing it again with his Googlewhack Adventure. He asked the audience not to tell of the surprises, or the tale, but I’m safe in saying he travels round the world looking for Googlewhack’s. What’s a Googlewhack? Two words typed into google.com, which only bring up one page, Dave Gorman is one, and so begins his quest, his trail and his tale.

Dave brings so much to his performance, which is basically one man telling a story for two and a bit hours, one man on stage, with some slides, a microphone and a talent to entertain…and entertain he does. Hans Christian Anderson move over, the master of story-telling is Dave Gorman. As he rambles through his true-life, bittersweet story you get so drawn in, you really forget about the outside world. It’s a very rare occasion on which I go to the theatre and don’t for a moment think about what I have to do when I get home, but this was truly a sense of escapism, Dave completely compels you to relive, with him what he went through, and you honestly do, every step closer to the goal, every move away is greeted with audible gasps, sighs, and moments of reflective silence. To be able to draw an audience in that much is a rare talent, fortunately it’s one Mr Gorman possess.

The story is as varied as any film; appealing and riveting, absorbing and spellbinding. It has more twists, turns, shocks and surprises then anything currently on at the movies. Dave really gives the performance his all, and engages the audience through his charisma and charm.

It’s been a long while since I’ve truly enjoyed an evening at the theatre, and come out with a big smile on my face but this little adventure took by breath away. The audience was with Dave for every step of his journey, and left satisfied, captivated and truly entertained.

The show has fantastic pacing, and the natural rhythm of life shines through. It may be slightly on the long side, and perhaps an interval may help, but to be honest, you can’t help but love this show. It’s a unique evening at the theatre and truly shows that the art of story telling is alive and well. For generations people have told stories to each other, and what a forgotten art it seems to be at times, but what a captivating one it is when done right.

Go and truly escape for an evening, be enthralled, laugh your socks off, and come out grinning from ear to ear….then get home and get googlewhacking…you know you want to!
