Review By: Chris Cox

Thumping into Bristol for the first time in its history the now infamous Circus Of Horrors is most certainly a reckless rollicking evening of all things that are nasty but nice!

It is one of the strangest things you could possibly witness; you come face to face in the cosy big top with all manner of characters, freaks, and strange people. This is one of the most unique styles of Circus to be viewed. It has taken a very gothic horror theme and mixed it with the classic hallmarks of theatre, circus and sideshow to create a rip-roaring adventure.

The whole theme is carried throughout, and any apprehension which you might have at the beginning very quickly disappears, and Dr Haze and his female co-host guide you through the evening’s enjoyment. There is a returning narrative of the loss of innocence, which doesn't quite work. I loved the idea of a central story to fit everything together, but it unfortunately turned into a collection of acts.

This show has a bit of everything, the urrgh factor, the "oh I shouldn't watch that, but somehow I'm strangely drawn to the freak with stretchy skin" factor and the all important wow factor...though just not enough.

The second half is truly spectacular in every sense of the word, the opening is beyond words, it's loud, it's bad and boy is it fun. With the original soundtrack sung by the performers, it has essences of a musical throughout, and you can't go far wrong with a collection of jaw dropping, jackass style treats.

Some sections lasted far too long though, and thus lost their impact and plenty of opportunities for humour were lost. You did feel you wanted a bit more of a laugh during the two-hour performance, but it wasn't delivered. Despite the appearance of being rough around the edges it is the complete opposite - a slick, smooth and professional production. What we did get though was an effective, unique and enchanted extravaganza.

Without any doubt this is a hell of a show, it is brilliant fun, and extraordinary entertainment. It by no means is suited to everyone, but teen groups and adult groups will have a bloody good time...in every sense of the word.
