Cinda.jpg (15909 bytes)A cast of 30 youngsters perform in this new-age modern pantomime which takes the traditional story of Cinderella and turns it on its head to create; CinderFella! The Pantomime, which has been, written by 16 to 18 year-olds; Vicki Redmond, Laura Thorne, Rachel Daniel and Peter Kirkup, has now been let leash upon the viewing and paying public.

What can I say about this production? Firstly, I have to completely take into account that this is an amateur show, in a village hall, with a low budget and a child cast. With this all in mind, I can safely say that Cinderfella does give the audience good value for money and truly seemed to please the majority of audience members.

The young approach of the panto worked effectively with the imaginative and humorous look at normal pantomimes and the 2002 twist of soap operas and modern day references. The possible expected wooden performances of amateurs was not shown at, although during the small dance routines the cast seemed nervous, embarrassed and not sure what they were doing...however like the whole of the production it was taken in their stride in a very tongue-in-cheek manner. The direction by Vicki Redmond was nothing brilliant however for someone of such a young age there was very little to fault.

Minor hiccups, line mess ups and awkward silences were a plenty, yet the audience never gave up hope as this young and vibrant cast kept the play swiftly moving along. Certain scenes defiantly carried this production, but the whole atmosphere of enjoyment was there, it was very light-hearted and good fun to watch.

The cast, who are all still at school, produced a performance which kept the audience interested and there were certain members that really stood out. Martian Jopp as CinderFella delivered a "cool" performance, especially since Martin was understudy for Glenn Goodwill, the main CinderFella! Madge was played by the only adult Pete Inman and brought laughs a plenty as did the brilliant newsreaders Alex Kelly and Mark Gale who brought a repetitive scene to life making it the highlight of the show at times. Another faultless performance was relinquished by Bethany Lunam, as Fairy Liquid, who had a delightful singing voice, comic timing and was liked by the whole audience.

The Larchmount Players who brought us this show are well worth keeping an eye on, if they keep using their youngsters to create performances, since they are sure to always be innotive. Cinderfella features all the hallmarks of an amateur production, but with that aside there is an unusual and imaginative script, with a pulsating cast, tacky jokes, bright costumes and cringe worthy moments! Cinderfella is a good attempt at something new, which seems to have pulled off.
