I'll be honest, "Annie" has never been my favorite musical. The plot is just a little too predictable for my liking and it's always had that cheesiness about it that, quite frankly, gets right up my nose. However, when I thought about it, I'd never actually seen it on the stage. So I went and guess what........I still hate it, but some great performances and a fantastic set have made me despise it that tiny bit less. 

As opening nights go, it was a very confident performance especially by 13 year old Stephanie Day who took the title role. She sang "Tomorrow" with great strength and clarity although, on occasion, produced a slightly harsh, forced sound but it wasn't enough to ruin an excellent first night performance. 

She was accompanied by a very funny Lesley Joseph as Miss Hannigan, who, although quite often had the audience in stitches, slightly lacked her usual sparkle. Also, Kevin Colson as Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks who was perfectly suited to the role in terms of size, shape and tone of voice but had a habit of talking too quickly which made him mumble and I missed a few of his lines.

In terms of the set, a sliding archway worked in a similar way to a pair of curtains, hiding when necessary and occasionally revealing a fantastic backdrop of New York City, which was used very effectively. 

Overall, "Annie" is perfect for the kids and could be enjoyed regardless of whether you've seen the film or not.
