Twelfth Night is one of the few Shakespeare comedies unfamiliar to me, therefore I decided that a trip to David Farrs production at the Old Vic to be a must.  And how right I was...

When reading the introduction to the play it is interesting to reveal that Twelfth Night is the final play in the set of comedies written over a decade by Shakespeare.  Many believe this is due to the death of Hamlet Shakespeare, Shakespeare's son who was buried in 1596 four ears prior to beginning Twelfth Night.  But do not be fooled, Twelfth Night follows the usual pattern of the familiar comedies such as Much ado about Nothing and a Midsummer Nights dream, along with a feeling of loss and uncertainty to where this journey will lead once the curtain falls.

As the curtain rises Angela Davies beautiful set is revealed.  But this is no ordinary set the stage floor appears to be covered in water!  As Viola (Nikki Amuka Bird) bursts out of a pool of water you know that this performance is not going to be your run of the mill Shakespeare.

As we follow the hilarious path through love, loss and lies we are scene by scene introduced to new strands of the story.  And many strands there are.  We are first introduced to the separation of identical twins Viola (Nikki Amuka Bird) and Sebastian (Joseph Kennedy).  Who then take us on separate journeys through the lives of the lovesick Orsino (Charles Edwards) and his pining for the mourning Olivia (Rakie Ayola).  Through this hilarious tale of love lost and gained we are entertained by the hilarious Sir Andrew Aguecheek (David Delve), Feste (Ian Lindsay) and the beautifully played Sir Toby Belch (Jimmy Yuill).  And it is through the practical jokery of this trio and the fantastic performance of Mark Lockyer as Malvolio, along with a few potted plants and a pair of yellow **garters** that creates the most memorable scene of the evening.

From the beautifully designed set to the immaculate casting of gifted actors such as Jimmy Yuill and Mark Lockyer this play is not one to miss.  David Farr appears to have done it again.  This play is one to watch for all ages and one that all will remember.  I guarantee it will have you chuckling too yourself all the way home....

But just one word of warning if your ticket is on Rows A or B..take a raincoat!  Only kidding...enjoy.
