2003 Nowt2Do.Com Award Winner

It’s fun, it’s sensational and it pushes the boundaries of music and performance towards the future of musical theatre.  It’s CYBERJAM.

It’s fun, it’s sensational and it pushes the boundaries of music and performance towards the future of musical theatre.  CYBERJAM – opened at the Queens Theatre on Tuesday September 23rd – is a spectacular fusion of music, dance and high-tech presentation.  Featuring an outstanding young cast of 35 hugely talented musicians – including no less than 20 brass instrumentalists - and dancers, CYBERJAM has been created with the Tony and Emmy award winning creative team behind the entertainment explosive – blast!

In the two hour, non-stop, high energy show, the virtuoso CYBERJAM cast play and dance their way – usually at the same time – through a hugely entertaining and eclectic mix of tunes.  Classic jazz numbers like Dave Brubeck’s ‘Blue Rondo A La Turk’ which was also an international hit for Al Jarreau, Miles Davis’ ‘Blue In Green’ and ‘Swing Swing Swing’ a big band special written by John Williams for an early Steven Spielberg film, ‘1941’, are interspersed with rock and pop classics such as Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, Alanis Morissette’s ‘Uninvited’, Pink Floyd’s ‘Great Gig In The Sky’ and the Beach Boys’ ‘Good Vibrations’.  The multi talented instrumentalists perform cutting edge, borderline gymnastic dance moves…while playing their instruments.  New compositions from Violaine Corradi and Jonathan Vanderkolff were commissioned especially for the show and then spiced up by the most revolutionary sounds.

I wanted to push away the music stands and the chairs and move the musicians away from the orchestra pit and onto the stage,” explains producer and artistic director, James Mason.  Cyberjam has been created to explore the physicality of music, to expand musical vocabulary and to revive interest in traditional instruments such as the trombone, the tuba, the flute which some people consider to have become unfashionable.  We have the most talented, in-demand young musicians in the cast and we play music in a very theatrical way.”

While the gymnastic cast perform onstage, in and around the audience and even in bubble chairs suspended high above the stage, the all-pervasive percussion presents yet another thrilling cyber dimension.  One of the percussion sets is the awesome ‘Drum Café’ – a gigantic four-sided steel structure housing the largest collection of electronic percussion instruments ever seen onstage.  Manufactured specially by Yamaha, the Drum Café allows the audience to hear directional sound as the drums are played on four sides of the cube.

CYBERJAM is a musical experience; a big band in motion; the future of musical theatre.

“…the choreography is a joy to watch; one is so amazed at the coordination of playing while performing fancy footwork that it’s easy to forget the cast are not only world class musicians but athletes as well.”
