CARMEN

SALVADOR TÁVORA’S ACCLAIMED FLAMENCO DANCE THEATRE STORY RETURNS TO THE UK IN SPRING 2003

Featuring over 30 singers, flamenco dancers, traditional musicians and a majestic white Andalusion stallion

Salvador Távora’s CARMEN will be returning to the United Kingdom following an acclaimed sell-out season in Spring and Autumn 2002 and will be visiting The Bristol Hippodrome from Tuesday 20th – Saturday 24th May 2003.

An electrifying spectacle, this flamenco steeped musical dance drama challenges the traditional story of CARMEN, with Távora’s radical new look at the legend of one of history’s most fascinating women.

Performed by Távora’s acclaimed company, LA CUADRA DE SEVILLA and presented through the expressive traditions of flamenco dance, the emotional power of this dramatic love story is reinforced by the sounds of 20 musicians, including flamenco singers and guitarists as well as a battalion of uniformed bugle players and drummers.  In addition to spectacular performances by dancers, the enthralling cast features a beautiful, white stallion, trained in the haute école school of dressage, it’s own exquisite dancing winning special notice from reviewers throughout the world.

“Electrifying, spine-tingling, thrilling” Sydney Morning Herald

“Barbarous and extravagant” Observer

“A tour de force – eat your heart out Joaquin Cortes” Guardian

“…raises the emotional temperature of the house several notches” The Village Voice, NY

Távora’s CARMEN tells the story of a woman of great character - a sexually rebellious and liberated working class heroine.  The memories of Távora’s great-great-grandmother - herself a cigarette factory worker in 19th century Seville and real life friend of gypsy icon Carmen de Triana, became the motivation for this production which counters the Mérrimée/Bizet’s romanticized version of her life.

Salvador Távora grew up in the working class area of El Cerro del Aguila during the period of cultural and economic difficulty following the Spanish Civil War.  Sent to work at 14 he has been a bullfighter and a flamenco singer. In 1971, he created his own company 'La Cuadra de Sevilla' in an attempt to fight the dilution of Andalusian culture.  His first major production, ‘Quejio’ was premiered at the Sorbonne in Paris where it caused an international sensation.  Since then, he has created and produced a dozen shows, each reflecting an ongoing commitment and celebration of traditional Andalusian culture and values.  His work has been seen at over 150 festivals in 36 countries.
