True West
By Sam Shepard (1981)
Director Wilson Milam
Designer Dick Bird
Lighting Designer Neil Austin

Pulitzer Prize winner Sam Shepard is one of America’s greatest playwrights. He exposes the profound contradictions of the American psyche in this dark, comic tale of feuding brothers and family dysfunction. A modern classic.

American Director Wilson Milam’s credits include The Lieutenant of Inishmore (RSC, West End and UK tour), Hurly Burly (The Old Vic, London) and Killer Joe (Bush/WestEnd).

True West sees the welcome return of designer Dick Bird and lighting designer Neil Austin who both worked on Great Expectations to huge acclaim.

American director Wilson Milam directs two of the UK’s most dangerous actors - Phil Daniels and Andrew Tiernan - in Pulitzer Prize-winner, Sam Shepard’s tale of two competitive, feuding brothers.

True West is a dark, dark comedy by one of America’s greatest living playwrights.  Austin (Andrew Tiernan) is shacked-up in his mother’s condo in California, all set to pitch his new screenplay to a Hollywood producer. When his good-for-nothing degenerate brother Lee (Phil Daniels) turns up, Austin’s ambitions are trashed and they go head-to-head. Gradually their envy of each other’s lives is exposed with terrifying results.

Phil Daniels shot to stardom for his role as Jimmy Cooper in the cult ’79 film Quadrophenia. His involvement with the title track of Blur’s album Parklife in 1994, has led to him appearing recently with the group in Moscow, and at this year’s Reading Festival.  Other film credits include Meantime (by Mike Leigh, with Tim Roth), Still Crazy (with Billy Connolly and Timothy Spall) and the voice of Fletcher the Rat in Chicken Run. On stage, his work with the RSC includes A Clockwork Orange, The Merchant of Venice and Measure for Measure.  Television credits include the accliamed White Teeth, Sex, Chips and Rock 'n' Roll with Sue Johnston, Holding On, The Pickwick Papers and Time Gentlemen, Please.

Andrew Tiernan  features in a wealth of successful films including Guy Ritchie’s Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Face (with Robert Carlyle and Ray Winstone) and most recently The Pianist, directed by Roman Polanski. On television, his roles include DC Rosper in Lynda La Plante’s Prime Suspect 1 and 2, ITV’s Cracker, and most recently as Tom Jordan in William and Mary.

American director Wilson Milam’s hit productions include The Lieutenant of Inishmore (RSC/West End and UK tour), Hurly Burly (Old Vic, London) and Sam Shepard’s A Lie of the Mind (Donmar Warehouse). He is reunited with designer Dick Bird and lighting designer Neil Austin having worked with them on Flesh Wound (Royal Court). Dick Bird and Neil Austin are welcomed back to Bristol Old Vic following their acclaimed designs for Great Expectations.
