 New World Idol

The search is on for a singing sensation as New World launches a major new competition in conjunction with GWR FM to find Bristol’s Karaoke King or Queen.

New World on Frogmore Street is Bristol’s only Karaoke restaurant and since it opened in August last year thousands of wannabe pop idols have stepped up to the mic and faced the music. Most fizzled rather than popped but a few shined so brightly that they blinded the audience (you know who you are and the entry forms await!). Somewhere out there there’s a New World Idol waiting to be discovered.

Now is the time to throw the hairbrush aside and go for gold as New World joins forces with GWR FM to find the ultimate impressionist who can beat the stars at their own game. If you can turn on the cheek like Kylie, Rock DJ like Robbie or drive your Sex Machine like Tom Jones this is your chance to take it to the top and walk away with the title of New World Idol.

As well as the coveted title, the winner will receive £1000 in prize money and a day at a top recording studio + pr consultancy from the South West premier music and leisure company CSPR. That’s a serious prize for serious talent determined to go all the way. The second prize winner gets £250 and a day in the studio, while the runner up gets £100 and a meal for two at New World and more determination than money can buy to do better in next year’s competition!

New World Idol is set to be a major event in Bristol this Autumn with four nail-biting heats hosted by New World and a grand final also being held at New World. The search for a star will be relentless as GWR and the station’s Black Thunder promo team attempt to hit every office, every workplace and every home in a bid to

find the person with the golden tonsils. The Black Thunder crew will be seeking out potential contestants and giving them an opportunity to play the Karaoke Challenge live on air. Throughout the four-week promotion there will be opportunities for GWR FM listeners to win a meal-for-four on the night of the heats so even if you can’t sing for toffee there’s still fab food to be won!

Kitt Wong of New World said that the Karaoke restaurant concept had been so successful in Bristol that this was the perfect opportunity to take it one step further. “Since Hear Say and Pop Idol it seems people are more obsessed than ever with stardom. We do get some fantastic singers in at the restaurant so it makes sense to introduce some competition and try and give the good ones a bit of a break,” says Kitt. “It’s all good fun - although I’m sure if you heard some of the Karaoke performers at the restaurant you wouldn’t agree!”

Fear not, only the finest voices will make it through to the competition. For the majority of out-of-tune crooners karaoke is just for fun and fuelled by Dutch courage - hence the translation ‘drink song’ in Japanese. It’s been a popular form of entertainment in the UK since it was first imported into pubs in the mid-1980s. Since New World opened as Bristol’s latest entertainment incantation, Karaoke is now experiencing a new lease of life as a cool alternative night out on the tiles.

New World has delivered Karaoke right into the 21st century, showing how bang up to date it can be - no matter how old the music is! The atmosphere is pure party, whilst the bar itself is clean, modern and sexy. It’s an altogether groovier experience, where people can come to eat, drink, relax, perform or simply sit back and enjoy the show!

The bar and restaurant is glass fronted, with a generous sun terrace outside. The interior is painted a mixture of royal plum, vibrant red and deep blue and the bar area is situated near the stage, so that people can enjoy a drink while they watch their friends, or grab some Dutch courage before taking the Karaoke plunge themselves. There are the all-essential TV screens set into the walls and even disco lights to help get the crowd in the mood! While there is a soft lounge area for people to get really comfortable, the dining area is adorned with flashy chrome seating and customers can watch food being prepared through portholes between the dinning room and the high tech kitchen.

The food is far from a secondary concern at New World. Customers help themselves to an extensive oriental buffet featuring the finest flavours from Chinese to Thai for one all-inclusive price. Top Chef, David Wong, has worked all over the world and won many awards for his cuisine.

We hear David won’t be winning any awards for his singing, but you might! If you’ve got what it takes then call 0117 9293 288 for an entry form.
