AWARDS JOY FOR HIPPODROME

BY CATHERINE HOLE - BRISTOL EVENING POST

11:00 - 19 March 2004

Bristol Hippodrome swept the board at the first annual theatre awards by entertainment website, nowt2do.com. The theatre won an award for Best Venue, Best Touring Musical, for Miss Saigon, and the 2004 We Can't Wait award, for the forthcoming Mary Poppins.

The website, set up three years ago by Bristol student Chris Cox, opened public voting for the awards in January.

Every show which was reviewed and performed in the area during 2003 was eligible for entry.

The large reviewing team then spent a month coming up with a shortlist for nominations.

Sarah Bennett-Milne, from the Hippodrome, said: "Now we know what it feels like to win an Oscar!

"Needless to say, we hoped we might be in with a chance of winning one of the categories.

"But we were bowled over to win Best Venue, to have hosted the Best Touring Musical for Miss Saigon and, of course, this proves that it's not just us who can't wait for Mary Poppins to open in September, but thousands of our patrons too."

The nowt2do site is one of Bristol's most popular entertainment websites, attracting more than 350,000 visitors each month.

Started up by Mr Cox when he was just 17, the site now includes reviews from London, Edinburgh, Ohio, Los Angeles and Paris as well as local venues.

Other winners included the Bristol Old Vic which was the venue or company chosen for the Best Year prize, for their full programme of shows. Rupert Penry-Jones and Ballykissangel star, Dervla Kirwan, were named Best Actor and Best Actress for their performances in the Old Vic's Les Liaisons Dangereuses.

The Jungle Book, staged at the Tobacco Factory, was named Best Play to grace local boards and the Funniest Night Out or "the evening where we laughed so hard beer came out of our noses" prize went to Al Murray, for Giving It Both Barrels, at Bristol Bierkeller.

The award for Most Unusual Night Out went to Clifton's acclaimed illusionist and entertainer, Derren Brown, for his performances at the Live Tobacco Factory and Weston Playhouse.

STAGE STARS REALLY CLICK

BY STEVE GRANT - BRISTOL EVENING POST

11:00 - 06 March 2004

A Number of Bristol venues and productions have won prizes in the first annual theatre awards by entertainment website Nowt2Do.Com. The site, set up three years ago by Bristol student Chris Cox, opened public voting for the awards in January.

Every show which was reviewed and performed during 2003 was eligible for entry and the large reviewing team spent a month coming up with a shortlist for nominations.

The public cast nearly 4,000 votes for the first annual awards and the site will be constantly updated as it hears from the winners in person.

Bristol Hippodrome was named as the Best Venue because of its "grandeur, excellent sight lines and comfort".

The theatre hosted Miss Saigon, which was voted Best Touring Musical, and is due to stage the world premiere of Mary Poppins, which was awarded the 2004 We Can't Wait award.

Bristol Old Vic was the venue or company chosen for the Best Year prize.

Rupert Penry-Jones and Ballykissangel star Dervla Kirwan were named Best Actor and Best Actress for their performances in the Old Vic's Les Liaisons Dangereuses.

The Jungle Book, staged at the Tobacco Factory, was named Best Play to grace local boards and the Funniest Night Out or "the evening where we laughed so hard beer came out of our noses" prize went to Al Murray for Giving It Both Barrels at Bristol Bierkeller.

The award for Most Unusual Night Out went to Clifton's internationally-renowned illusionist and entertainer Derren Brown for his performances at the Live Tobacco Factory and Weston Playhouse.

Nowt2Do.Com is one of Bristol's most popular entertainment websites, attracting over 350,000 visitors each month.

Started up by Chris Cox when he was just 17, the site now includes reviews from London, Edinburgh, Ohio, Los Angeles and Paris as well as local venues.

Chris, who lives in Clifton, said: "Bristol has seen some fantastic theatre this year and Nowt2Do.com is delighted to have been part of it."
