Check out our feature on the Hotel Du Vin Bristol

Hotel du Vin & Bistro, Brighton, the fifth property in this acclaimed micro-chain, opened in October 2002.

The latest hotel sits on a narrow street in the area of Brighton known as The Lanes, just 50 yards from the seafront.  The Lanes are the oldest part of Brighton, steeped in history and linked by a network of intriguing cobble-stoned streets and alleyways.  The city’s most fashionable district is the setting for a multitude of antique shops, galleries, boutiques, cafés, restaurants, and bars.

The Hotel du Vin building is a quirky collection of part gothic-styled buildings built around a central courtyard over which is a pergola clad in vines, for outdoor drinking and meeting.  Internally, the main building has several intriguing features: a heavily carved staircase, bizarre gargoyles, and a double height hall that is almost ecclesiastical in style.  These and other features have been retained and restored to their former glory – with the HDV twist and lots of seaside touches!

Entering from the street, guests walk through the informal reception area straight into the bar.   Suspended from the high, timbered ceiling are wooden seagulls that swoop and perch among the beams.  Continuing the theme, the bases to the many lamps are recovered pieces of driftwood or old printing rollers, and the steps in the staircase that leads to the upper mezzanine level are made from old railway sleepers.  Cosy leather armchairs and brown velvet sofas are arranged around the room.

At one end of this room is the bar, while glass walls and doors at the other end display the bistro.  Overhead the large mezzanine provides further seating and ‘billiards on the balcony’, and everywhere the walls are decked with black and white photographs of famous people (from Winston Churchill to Sharon Stone) smoking cigars.  The cigar element is always important at HdV hotels, and behind the bar is a humidor from which guests can select their favourite smoke.

The Bistros décor is that now easily recognisable to those who know Hotel du Vin’s other properties.  Offering the ‘serious but never stuffy’ dining ambience, the room evokes the same Parisian fin de siècle exuberance of its sister hotels.  Here the walls are decked with wine-related prints and pictures, and the flor-to-ceiling windows that open onto the street are festooned with dried hops.  The dark wooden floor boards, majestic pillars and deep hued tables and chairs create a classic bistro ambience, filled with natural light during the day and set to the flicker of candles and low lighting in the evenings.

In keeping with the HdV wine theme, each of the 37 bedrooms is sponsored by – and named after – a celebrated wine house.  Inside, the rooms are hung with pictures relating to the room’s name.  In homage to the seaside setting, the hotel uses beach-style touches to create a fun feel.  Those bedrooms which surround the central courtyard of the building are clad in wood and painted in chalky blue-green, reminiscent of beach huts, while inside the bedrooms shades of blue and sand have been used.

All bedrooms feature the dazzling white Egyptian bed linen, delicious duvets, comfy cushions, and large beds for a sense of user-friendly luxury.  Tables and desks are decked with magazines, stationery, and information about the hotel and city.

Bathrooms feature vast monsoon showers – many ‘walk-in’ and with aluminium trays – while the scroll top baths are raised on drift wood and old railway sleepers.  All bathrooms offer plentiful supplies of HdV bathroom products, made exclusively for Hotel du Vin by Arran Aromatics.

Two of the suites have telescopes for views out to sea, but it is in the Loft Suite, Roederer Cristal, where the fun really starts.  A private roof terrace looks out towards the beach, while the bathroom features a massive ‘party shower’ and side by side scroll top baths for sociable bath times!  And those staying in the suite also get the use of their own private beach hut on Hove Marina.
