Lawrence
Leung's one-man show Sucker's basic premise is to explain and show some of
the tricks of the trade of a conman, cheat and liar. Its more of an expose
than a how to though.
Lawrence
has great entuhasim for his show and injects his young outlook on things
into the show, he has a reliable patter, yet some of his jokes leave a lot
to be desired. He doesn't really make the audience respond, and doesn't
quite work the audience to his advantage.
There is a
good story behind the show, however there is not enough of what you came
to see. He tells too much of his history and his life and then at the end
gets far too preachy, leaving the audience restless. The problem with this
amount of talking without a microphone is that its hard to hear and gets a
bit too boring.
There are
defiantly not enough explanations and demonstrations of the tricks,
however those that are show are brilliant. A joy to watch, and expertly
performed. These moments are the highlight of the show, but there are
nowhere near enough.
The use of
a video camera and the projection of the card moves is a great little
idea, as are the slides to go with some of the patter. However you leave
wanting to have seen more slight of hand.
Sucker
has found a good little niche, a mix of magic, mind games and stand up,
yet if you want to be amazed see Marc Salem, if you want magic see Paul
Zenon. Sucker can’t live up to theses.
That said it shows some real promise as a show, and has bags of potential
to be a big hit.
