Paul Zenon
is a master of his trade, a great magician, a top bloke, and a man
passionate about his show and magic.
Meeting
with him in the Assembly Rooms bar at 4.30pm Paul looked like he had just
woke up…the fact is he had! He had been out after his performance last
night, like every night enjoying the shows, and alcohol which Edinburgh
has to offer.
The
good thing about Paul is that he has never hidden the fact that he is a
magician from a northern background who does tricks. Unlike David Blane,
who according to Paul, copied Paul’s Tv Specials to get some of his
idea’s, and even stole four of his tricks, Paul knows he is just doing
magic and enjoys letting the audiences for his show see it in an up close
and original environment. Using regular items you’d find pretty much
everywhere, except a giant can of fruit! Paul performs a remarkable amount
of tricks in his one-hour show, but admits to being wary about it.
Before
embarking on the tour he used to do warm ups for headliners, maybe 20
minutes, but now he has to do a whole hour a night for 26 days, is he ever
board of it? Oh no, he’s use to two shows a night for five months from
his past doing Summer Seasons so this is a nice relax for him! He often
mixes his material up, bringing in old tricks and trying new ones, and the
show is full of classic one liners and throw away lines. Paul likes to get
the audience involved in tricks and structures his show around them
allowing for plenty of laughs.
The
tour of this show begins later this year before allowing Paul time to have
a bit of rest, then head off to the far east to do more magic and make
more shows! He’ll leave Edinburgh like many others with warm feelings
towards the city and the magic of the festival, with new friends and with
a great reputation behind him as not only a tv performer, but a great live
magician. Oh and of course a massive hangover which no amount of magic
dust or wand waving can cure!
