Nowt2Do.Com Cinema Review

Name: Proof Of Life
Rating:
15
Release Date:
2nd March 2001
Length:
135 Minutes
Stars: Russell Crowe, Meg Ryan and David Morse
Director:
Taylor Hackford
Reviewer: Chris Cox

Peter Bowman (David Morse), an American engineer in a Latin American country is kidnapped for a $3 million dollar ransom. Abandoned by her husband's employer and insurance company, his wife Alice (Meg Ryan) refuses to give up on his life. She takes on the task of bringing him home but soon realizes she can't do that without help.
An expert in "K&R" (Kidnap & Ransom), Terry Thorne (Russell Crowe) takes on the job, but soon finds it to be trickier than anyone thought. Lengthy negotiations, mutual respect, mutual attraction all happen whilst bartering for Peter's life.

So that is the story but has Taylor Hackford managed to make this action suspense drama about desperation, loyalty and faith set against the backdrop of the big profit business of international kidnapping work as a film? The simple answer is yes he has!

This film has a stunning opening, throwing you into the characters with some unusual angles and totally original direction style. The next thing I realized was that the film was half way through. The pacing was perfectly timed and the perfectly casted cast were portraying this new and original story in a believable manner. That is the point of this film, it is believable, this really happens and the whole idea for the film came from an article about "Adventures In The Ransom Trade."

The film moves along, keeping up the tension but still managing to get the odd snigger from the moments of light comedy. These mixed in with the dramatic storyline and action make up a film which is adventurous, exciting, thrilling, dramatic and dam good! The scene swaps happen in a magical way which are a pleasure to behold, and the sensible and realistic story do move this away from a brainless action movie to a more dramatically, tense exciting action movie. The realistic story is however somewhat simple, yet still effective with a few twists that are unfortunately hinted at too early.

Russell Crowe makes yet another mark on Hollywood with his portrayal as the K&R man, while Meg Ryan slots into the equation flawlessly. The only problem is that their on screen chemistry isn't quite there leaving the possible love interest on its own, not fitting into the movie. David Morse though, as the kidnapped victim is stunning. His face tells his story on its own, and he manages to make this movie seem like two in one. His film about being a hostage and there film about saving him.

This is the movie to sit back, enjoy and be wowed over by.
