The South's premier leftfield and breakbeat club host fortnightly events at Carling Academy Bristol. The BlowPop residents Stereo 8, Mister Craig, John Stapleton, All Funked Up and Doctor Moody are regularly joined by quarterly residents Krafty Kuts, the Plump DJs and the Scratch Perverts, as well as the most exciting specialist DJs and live artists from around the world.

BlowPop began in early 1996 as a monthly night at the Blue Mountain Club in central Bristol, with a music policy ranging from hip hop to reggae to breakbeat, in contrast to the generally house-based music policy of most other clubs. In its first phase BlowPop featured appearances from guest DJ's including many from the fledgling breaks and nu-jazz scenes, as well as those who were influential in the rise of 'big beat' music. Mr. Scruff, Mark Rae, Jon Carter, the Wiseguyz, Propellerheads, Nightmares on Wax, Renegade Soundwave, and the Freestylers were amongst the many who entertained packed dancefloors at the club.

In summer 1998, BlowPop entered its second phase when founder John Stapleton (the man behind the 'Dope on Plastic' lp series) joined forces with Julian Smith and Charles Newman, the team behind Bristol's Head2Head night. New blood proved the essential ingredient, and BlowPop grew to become a major player on the breaks circuit. Many more artists performed - from old hands like Afrika Bambaataa to new stars like Krafty Kuts and the Plump DJ's. In fact the Plumps, Scratch Perverts and Krafty Kuts joined the BlowPop team as quarterly residents.

The third phase in the evolution of BlowPop began in June 2002, with the first night of BlowPop at the Bristol Academy. The venue has three rooms, giving scope for both bigger and more varied presentations. Over 1400 clubbers turned out on the opening night to see Gilles Peterson, Jazzanova, Nitin Sawhney and the Scratch Perverts join the BlowPop residents for a triumphant and eclectic evening. Since then BlowPop has flourished, with an ever-growing list of featured artists, from DJ Krush to X-Press 2 to Deadly Avenger.

Great ol' time! Saw a great act called Dubruvnik in the Bath Ales tent, Does anyone know anything about them: Where they play etc?? I look it up on the internet, and I get loads of stuff about holidays in Croatia!

First time for me in 2004 and what an experience, such a safe place to party. Such brilliant organisation. Thanks a lot, roni size was ace!

A.Fanatitic:

Most years the sun is shining bright, the music is eclectic, the drinks are flowing freely and the love is shared around.

Last year: too many pikeys plus a weather forcast of grim to shit = miserable atmosphere and fights galore.

This year: no dance tent = less pikeys?

We'll have to wait and see!

Ben Williams:

The ultimate day out, just go and chill!

Mary James:

Great fun, always go with some mate and have a great laugh
