This Sleeping Beauty proclaims to be A Gothic Romance, and that’s what it is, Tchaikovsky meets True Blood if you will – or at least fairies with fangs. So, put any lingering thoughts of Disney’s animated classic out of your head, there’s no Prince Charming here, Beauty (or Princess Aurora, danced wonderfully by Hannah Vassallo) is awoken by the Royal Gamekeeper, a splendid Dominic North.

The tale begins in 1890. “Once upon a time there was a King and Queen who could not have a child …” and so the fairies supply a little girl and what a surprise she is, a poppet brilliantly realised in puppet form. Fairies play a big part in this tale; good and bad, along with spells and vampires and curses. But then a story needs a narrative and what this ballet has is a strong through line that spans a hundred years. Bourne has reimagined both the ballet and the story.

Princess Aurora has a fairy godfather in Count Lilac, Liam Mower, to watch over her and add a little help to finding her true love. You see, the poor girl is cursed by the evil dark fairy Carabosse and when she dies her son Caradoc, Adam Maskell, keeps the curse alive.

He is there at her 16th birthday party. It’s an ‘anyone for tennis occasion’ with Caradoc providing a brooding menace amongst the boaters and racquets. Whilst suitors present themselves to her Aurora has eyes for only her secret love, Leo, the Gamekeeper, who wanders into the scene with a brace a rabbits and a shotgun. ... more >>
