Has it just been three years since a strangely dressed woman with a disturbing wiggle for the Britain’s Got Talent Judges opened her mouth to sing and became an internet sensation? The old showbiz adage of becoming an overnight star was never truer, Susan Boyle is a sensation. The mad press covered, being re-christened SuBo, the ups and downs, losing out to Diversity on the final; the miner’s daughter from Scotland went through the wringer. It wasn’t that she took the UK by storm, she took the world by storm. To have a musical based on your life three years after emerging from a lonely house in Blackburn feels a little like those biographies of 12 year old pop princess and princess – a little early. But Susan Boyle’s was 47 when she first appeared on TV and there’s a wealth of story to tell. Elaine C Smith, who is outstanding a Boyle, and Alan McHugh have written a show that brings Susan’s story to life. The small cast work brilliantly to conjure up moments of an upbringing heavy with Catholic working class values. It’s the story of a shy little girl bullied at school for being different, taunted by adults but loved by her parents – even if her father put an end to her seeing her one and only boyfriend. ... more >> |
